In 2008 he began a practice-based PhD at Edinburgh College of Art, researching interaction design from a visual communication perspective.

Dave has recently been commissioned by AVA Publishing to write a design book aimed at undergraduate design students. Interface Design will be published in January 2013.
His academic papers so far include "A Can of Worms: Has Visual Communication a Position of Influence on Aesthetics of Interaction?" presented in Rome in February 2011; and "Moving Across The Boundaries: Visual Communication Repositioned In Support of Interaction Design" has been presented at Create 10 conference in Edinburgh in June/July 2010
His first paper entitled "Interaction Design: Where's the Graphic Designer in the Graphical User Interface?" was presented at IASDR 2009 conference, in Korea, in October 2009 (see 'Talks' link opposite).
Dave's non-PhD paper is an exegesis of a CG student film project produced in 2008 for Liverpool Biennial 08. It critically explores the development of the students involved against IDEO's 'T-shaped person' model. Its title is: "Traceur Tag: Developing IDEO ‘T-shaped’ People Whilst Producing a Student CG Video for Liverpool Biennial 08" and is available in the 'Papers' section opposite.
Education:
Dave was awarded a MA New Media Production from International Centre for Digital Content (ICDC) in 2006. He also has a BA(Hons) Design and Art Direction and a HND Design (Communication). His professional background was as an illustrator and publisher before becoming a lecturer. His first digital interactive product was built in 1997 as an online illustration portfolio.

His design practice spans a varied career within Visual Communication. He was a freelance illustrator for ten years and his illustration work is archived in the published hardback book Non-Norm (http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/775508). Moving from there into the web, he was a consultant for Royal Schools for the Deaf Manchester for their web strategy. During this period he re-designed the School website and designed several content-specific micro sites between 2000-03. He has been a design lecturer since then running degrees in interaction, computer games and graphic design. Recently he has designed and published several non-fiction and fiction books. His online work has been design strategic and holistic. Currently he is researching the Aesthetics of Interaction, and the aesthetics of use.
