About

Dr Lisa Kidd is a Research Fellow in Public Health based within the School of Health and affiliated to the Institute for Applied Health Research.

Lisa graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2001 and has a background in acute surgical nursing and cancer care. Lisa began her research career in 2003, initially at the University of Glasgow, before moving to a full time post at the Cancer Care Research Centre at the University of Stirling, which she held until 2009. During this time, Lisa was involved in undertaking several systematic reviews, feasibility work on mobile technology for symptom management and a large Scotland-wide patient experiences programme of research. Lisa was also involved in coordinating patient and public involvement in research at the Centre. During this time, Lisa also undertook her doctoral research which was a mixed methods study exploring perceptions of control, self efficacy and experiences of engaging in self care in people receiving treatment for colorectal cancer.

Drawing on these roots, Lisa continues to work in the field of self care/self management research with a particular interest in why people engage (or don’t engage) in self care and how to support people to engage through the provision of tailored self care support, with a particular interest in qualitative and mixed methods research. Other areas of interest include: long term conditions, health literacy, patient and public involvement in research, men’s health/health promotion and parenting of children with chronic illnesses, and undertaking systematic reviews. Her past and current collaborations include academics at the University of Glasgow, University of Manchester, University of Stirling, Leeds University, and University of York as well as international collaborations at the University of Otago, New Zealand and the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. Lisa also works closely with patients and members of the public and clinicians and practitioners from NHS Scotland and members of the voluntary sector.

Lisa is a member of the Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland network, which play a crucial role in raising awareness and policy making around long term condition management. Lisa has been an invited peer reviewer for academic journals including, Psycho-Oncology, Qualitative Health Research, Supportive Care in Cancer, Health Expectations, European Journal of Oncology Nursing and European Journal of Cancer Care.

Lisa is currently PI on a funded project to develop a self-management support intervention for stroke patients based on the concept of readiness to engage.
